Lisbon workshop: a living system

O workshop “A living System” surge no âmbito da parceria entre o VitruviusFablab-ISCTE.IUL, o FabLabEDP e a Rhino3DPortugal. O objectivo central é explorar as tecnologias digitais e os seus contributos para superar alguns dos novos desafios propostos à Sociedade e à Arquitectura em Portugal. Com o desenvolvimento tecnológico, ferramentas, antes limitadas às áreas não criativas, começam a fazer parte do quotidiano dos alunos nos laboratórios das universidades de Arquitectura e a influenciar os processos conceptuais. Os métodos de trabalho e de representação do arquitecto estão a mudar rapidamente, com a introdução de programas CAD-CAM de modelação geométrica e paramétrica. Nos últimos anos têm sido disponibilizados novos softwares de representação e fabricação digital, que têm permitido criar novas formas de interagir com o computador e com a arquitectura. A arquitectura contemporânea, nas suas várias escalas, procura uma maior flexibilidade, adaptabilidade e interactividade tendo em conta simultaneamente os meios e os objectivos do sistema cinético. Torna-se, assim, essencial aos actores das áreas criativas adquirirem novos conhecimentos face às mais recentes inovações tecnológicas e como estas poderão responder aos desafios e problemas da sociedade.

O workshop explora o uso do Grasshoper, Firefly e Arduíno como ferramentas criativas, técnicas de design, simulação e prototipagem de soluções 3D interactivas em arquitectura

O workshop teórico-prático de 64 horas, ministrado em inglês e português, será composto por dois módulos: (1) LS_01: Grasshopper+Firefly +Arduíno e Oficina; (2) LS_02: Estúdio de Design – Discursive Wall.

O workshop destina-se a estudantes e profissionais de diferentes áreas do conhecimento, nomeadamente da arquitectura, design, artes plásticas, engenharia, música, programação. Os participantes vão gerar modelos 3D à escala. A participação está limitada a 20 participantes com ou sem conhecimentos sobre os softwares. Os participantes trabalharão individualmente e em grupo utilizando os seus portáteis. Para se inscrever deverão preencher o formulário até dia 28 de Fevereiro 2012. A inscrição só será valida se receber um e-mail a confirmar a aceitação.

The workshop “A living System” involves three partners: VitruviusFablab-ISCTE.IUL, FabLabEDP and Rhino3DPortugal. The main goal is to explore digital technologies and their contribution to solve some of the new challenges presented to the society and architecture in Portugal. With technological developments, tools once limited to not creative areas begin to be part of the everyday life of students in University Architecture Laboratories and change its design processes. The architecture design methods are changing rapidly with the introduction of CAD-CAM software’s. In recent years, new software’s have been available for 3D representation and digital fabrication, which have allowed creating new ways of interacting with the computer and architecture. Contemporary architecture in its various scales, seeks greater flexibility, adaptability and interactivity taking into account both the means and goals of kinetic systems. Thus, it is essential to the creative industry players to acquire new knowledge about the latest technological innovations and how they can solve some of the problems and challenges of today’s society.

The workshop will explore the use of Grasshopper, Firefly and Arduino as creative and technical tools in all the design process, to simulation and prototype 3D interactive architecture solutions.

The theoretical and practical workshop (64 hours) taught in English and Portuguese, will be composed of two modules: (1) LS_01: Firefly +Grasshopper + Arduino and Scale Model Fabrication; (2) LS_02: Design Studio – Discursive Wall.

This workshop is intended for students and professionals from different areas of knowledge, (architecture, design, fine arts, engineering, music and programming) who are interested in the process of design: from ideation to prototyping. The participants will generate scale models.

Registration is limited to 20 participants with or without software knowledge. Participants will work individually and in group. Participants must take their own laptops to the workshop. Registrants should complete the form by 28 February 2012. Once registered, you will receive an email confirming your acceptance.

Los Talleres
Los asistentes a ALGOMAD deberán escoger una opción entre los talleres 1 y 2, centrados en métodos generativos de diseño y que tendrán lugar por la mañana, y otra opción entre los talleres 3 y 4, más orientados a programación y que se celebrarán por la tarde.
Taller 1. Generative Components
GenerativeComponents (GC), es un sistema de diseño paramétrico y asociativo que permite explorar diferentes alternativas de diseño. GC permite trabajar en un ambiente gráfico combinado con scripting y con programación de bajo nivel si es necesario. GC es una herramienta probada en diferentes estudios de arquitectura e ingeniería y corre sobre la sólida plataforma Microstation.
GC da la oportunidad a los usuarios de crear sus propias aplicaciones (.DLL) geométricas y lógicas de una manera gráfica. Desde este punto de vista GC puede verse como una herramienta para hacer herramientas. GenerativeComponents puede ser resumido en 5 características:
Modelado de geometría convencional y compleja.
Sistema de control paramétrico y asociativo.
Extensión de la aplicación (hacer las propias herramientas) mediante la interfaz de usuario.
Soporta programación orientada a objetos, reflejo y scripting.
Generación automática de documentación y planos durante el modelado. El programa previsto es el siguiente:
Día 1
Introducción a GenerativeComponents.
Variables y Listas, Series().
Fabricación.
Generación de objetos personalizados (FeatureType)
Día 2
Importar y exportar datos a Excel.
Introducción a GCscript.

Taller 2. Grasshopper Grasshopper
(GH) es una extensión de Rhinoceros 3d para el diseño generativo y la programación gráfica de formas complejas. Con GH el usuario puede definir relaciones y comportamientos tal y como los piensa, trabajando con un modelo en el que la geometría es dinámica y reactiva ante los parámetros que se elijan (la posición del sol, el tamaño de una habitación, el color de una fachada...)GH está basado en programación simbólica, es un sistema muy visual y a la vez muy potente, que permite sacarle partido desde el primer minuto. El taller puede ser seguido por cualquier usuario con mínimos conocimientos de geometría. Tener experiencia con Rhino ayudará pero no es imprescindible. El programa previsto es el siguiente:
Día 1
Introducción a Grasshopper.
Estructuras Básicas. Análisis de ejemplos.
Reactividad y espacios duales.
Día 2
Planteamiento y desarrollo de un proyecto personal en GH.

Taller 3. RhinoScript
RhinoScript es un lenguaje de programación sencillo basado en Visual Basic. Con RhinoScript se pueden añadir todo tipo de funciones nuevas a Rhino, automatizar determinadas tareas y generar nuevos comandos que permitan crear formas libres y formas combinadas mediante variables paramétricas.
El Taller puede ser seguido por quienes no tengan conocimientos ni de Visual Basic ni de Rhino aunque se requiere experiencia en el uso de técnicas digitales. Y un conocimiento aunque sea muy básico de lenguajes de programación y de Rhino o programas similares ayudará a sacar más rendimiento del curso. El primer día se proporcionará amplia documentación para facilitar el seguimiento del taller. El programa previsto es el siguiente:
Día 1
Introducción a los lenguajes de programación.
Análisis de ejemplos simples en RS.
Creación de scripts simples en RS.
Día 2
Planteamiento y desarrollo de un proycto personal en RS.

Taller 4. Processing
Processing es un lenguaje de código abierto que se utiliza para programar la generación de formas e imágenes 2D y 3D, animaciones y todo tipo de procedimientos interactivos. Es utilizado por todo tipo de profesionales, incluyendo artistas, diseñadores y arquitectos, tanto para crear productos que pueden difundirse por la web como para experimentar con métodos de generación de formas de todo tipo.
Es un lenguaje simple que puede asimilarse con facilidad por quien tenga una experiencia media en el uso de herramientas digitales y nociones muy básicas de programación. Durante el taller se dará una introducción sintética al program y se proporcionarán ejemplos simples a partir de los cuales se pueda experimentar libremente. El programa previsto es el siguiente:
Día 1
Introducción a los lenguajes de programación.
Análisis de ejemplos simples en Processing.
Creación de scripts simples en Processing.
Día 2
Planteamiento y desarrollo de un proyecto personal en Processing.

Open Up Workshop: Projects for the digital facade of Medialab-Prado

February 9 - 23, 2010Venue: Medialab-Prado in Madrid (Spain) Open Up has just started! About 70 artists, designers, architects, programmers and many other interested people from all over the world are already working in this exciting workshop to create contents for the first digital facade for artistic purposes of Madrid, a 150m2 and 27.000 LEDs (pixels) screen.
In this event 7 projects selected through an international open call will be collaboratively developed within this next 2 weeks.
The goal of this project production workshop is to explore the relationship with the urban space by opening production processes through different citizen participation strategies. Selected projects are being developed with the aid of tutors and technical assistants such as Jordi Claramonte, Chandler McWilliams, Casey Reas, Víctor Viña, Chris Sugrue and Massimo Avvisati.
The programme includes theoretical activities on February 9, 10 and 16, with lectures by tutors and lecturers such as Erkki Huhtamo and Jennifer Steimkamp. You can follow all lectures and project presentations through live streaming.
We have just created a new experience to document the process through a blog to spread the contents generated during the workshop, using social networks, video platforms, feeds, microblogging, etc. (http://www.medianeralab.es/blog).

Advances in Architectural Geometry. CALL FOR PAPERS

Geometry lies at the core of the architectural design process. It is omnipresent, from the initial form-finding stages to the final construction. Modern geometric computing provides a variety of tools for the efficient design, analysis, and manufacturing of complex shapes. On the one hand this opens up new horizons for architecture. On the other hand, the architectural context also poses new problems to geometry. Around these problems the research area of architectural geometry is emerging. It is situated at the border of applied geometry and architecture.
This symposium will bring together researchers from the fields of architecture and geometry to discuss recent advances in research and practice and to identify and address the most challenging problems. We aim at connecting researchers from architectural practices and academia. The event consists of two parts, two days of hands-on workshops followed by two days of oral and poster presentations in conference style, including four keynote speakers.
Advances in Architectural Geometry is planned to be the premier venue for disseminating new research ideas and cutting-edge results at the interface of geometry processing and architectural design. This emerging area draws from architectural design, applied mathematics, computer science, and engineering.
We are in particular inviting submissions related to the following topics:

eCAADe 2010: Future Cities

For the first time in human history, more than 50% of the world's population lives in urban regions. Cities are the larges, most complex, and most dynamic man-made systems. They are vibrant centers of cultural life and engines that drive the global economy.
Contemporary cities are environmentally, socially, and economically unsustainable. The quality of urban life is threatened by such factors as pollution, rising temperatures, limited resources, congestion, social inequalities, aging of large sectors of the world population, poverty, informality, crime, and economic imbalances. The overall planning of future cities is a challenge that can only be faced by interdisciplinary teams combining multitudes of backgrounds and expertise.
The focus of the eCAADe 2010 conference is that of tools, methods, and theories that support the new design of new cities and the transformation of existing cities. In this paper, we review a number of processes that can be explored by designers and suggest how design as a discipline can benefit from this research. These processes include self-organization, swarm systems and ant colonies, evolution, and generative grammars. We give example applications of these processes to creativity and design.

The idea was to continue working with parametric software in order to design a space with the capacity of combining a self structured parametric skin with elements capable to control the radiosity and sound effects. The cell has a size capable to fit at least 10 people at one time, but the main issue is that it has the possibility to modify its overall shape or components by changing the parameters which are taken from the surrounding environment; some of which are the amount of light, terrain inclinations, inner space needed, etc. In order to explore its materiality and to allow a natural growth based on the main configuration of the geometry and the material itself, each individual component creates a grid capable to stretch and generate new variations. http://archmpc.blogspot.com/

The historical documentation suggests that Pythagorean-Euclidian geometry appears to be a crucial ingredient for the understanding of Portuguese urban designthinking and urban design-making. To unveil the genesis of the morphological urban order present in the Portuguese colonial plans of the eighteenth century, a descriptive method, Shape Grammar has been adopted. Shape Grammar, as method, supports the analysis of the form-making logic and has proved to be powerful in shape analysis, description, interpretation, classification, evaluation and generation of a design language.

Worskhop tutors: Jordi Claramonte, Chandler McWilliams, Casey Reas, and Víctor Viña. Directed and coordinated by Nerea Calvillo.

Open Up is a workshop focused on the development of projects for the digital façade in Medialab-Prado's building. This call is meant for project proposals to be collaboratively developed during the workshop-seminar taking place in Madrid from February 9 through 23, 2010.
The goals of the workshop are to explore the relationship between the urban screen and public space, to experiment with the screen’s communicative, narrative and visual capacities, and to investigate its potential to offer new forms of participation. Selected projects will be developed under the supervision of teachers, technical assistants and an extensive group of collaborators.
Projects submitted to this call should take the following ideas into consideration: the development of strategies for public participation, activation of urban space through the screen, fostering public visibility of agents that normally have none, visualization of public collectives; interaction with portable devices, etc. All those interested in collaborating in one of the selected projects can sign in from January 5 through February 8, 2010.

Some Brazilian modern architecture critics suggest the existence of an influence of Wright’s prairie houses over Artigas’ early work, but the methods used to reach to this conclusion are always empirical and not very objective. The present work aims to confirm this influence in a more rational manner, comparing Wright’s prairie houses grammar developed by Koning and Eizenberg (1981) to Artigas’ first phase grammar that will developed in this work.

Generative methods in urban design: a progress assessment The year 2007 marked the 20-year anniversary of A New Theory of Urban Design (1987), a slender volume by Christopher Alexander and colleagues that serves as a notable milepost within the half-century old “design methods movement” in which Alexander himself played a seminal role. The “generative” design method of A New Theory focused less upon the specification of a final form through schematic planning, and more on the stepwise process by which a form might emerge from the evolutionary actions of a group of collaborators. In so doing, it challenged the notion of “design” as a progressive expression of schematic intentions, and argued for a conception of design as a stepwise, non-linear evolution in response to a series of contextual urban factors. In the 20 years since, significant progress has been made to develop the insights of generativity in urban design, as in other fields. Some of Alexander's ideas have been incorporated - notably by practitioners of The New Urbanism - and some have been challenged and dismissed, including, notably, by Alexander himself. The author assesses progress since this milepost volume - substantial, he argues - as well as setbacks and shortcomings, and significant opportunities still remaining.

The University of Oulu Department of Architecture is hosting a seminar titled Generate - From algorithm to structure on the 30.10.2009. The seminar languages are Finnish and English.The seminar focuses on the uses of algorithmic design methods in practice. The programme includes eminent international speakers: Michael Hensel (Germany), David Serero (France), Luis Fraguada (Spain), Martin Tamke (Denmark) and Markus Wikar (Finland). The Algorithmic Architecture Project Group will also be presenting their work. During the seminar we will also celebrate the opening of an exhibition on algorithmic architecture and the publication of Generate - from algorithm to structure. After the seminar there will be a party held at the Architects Guild House.There are 300 places on the seminar. The first 150, in order of registration will receive a seat in the main auditorium. A Generative System for Mamluk Madrasa Form-Making
In this paper, a parametric shape grammar for the derivation of the floor plans of educational buildings (madrasas) in Mamluk architecture is presented. The grammar is constructed using a corpus of sixteen Mamluk madrasas that were built in Egypt, Syria, and Palestine during the Mamluk period. Based on an epistemological premise of structuralism, the morphology of Mamluk madrasas is analyzed to deduce commonalities of the formal and compositional aspects among them. The set of underlying common lexical and syntactic elements that are shared by the study cases is listed. The shape rule schemata to derive Mamluk madrasa floor plans are formulated. The sets of lexical elements and syntactic rules are systematized to form a linguistic framework. The theoretical framework for the formal language of Mamluk architecture is structured to establish a basis for a computerized model for the automatic derivation of Mamluk madrasa floor plans.

Generative Design in Architecture and Mass-Customization

In this study, the generative design in housing is characterized through the utilization of shape grammars. The functions and the relations within a chosen housing typology are described and different types are produced through the defined relations. Three main constraints are the number of inhabitants (room numbers and sizes), the number of storeys and the main module. In this case, cube is selected as the main module. Mardin is selected as a region to be focused on because of its grammatical housing morphology. Different colors are given to different functions; kitchens, living spaces, rooms, bathrooms, semi-open spaces and open spaces. Different types and variations are produced computationally, and by using this method, it is aimed to integrate the customers to the generative design process. This method is likely to emphasize variation and personalization and make a start to mass customization.
