Call for collaborators Open Up Workshop: projects for the digital façade of Medialab-Prado

Join us for the Open Up international workshop! This event is focused on the development of 8 selected projects for the digital façade in Medialab-Prado cultural center's building. The goals of the workshop are to explore the relationship between the urban screen and public space, to experiment with the screen’s communicative, narrative and visual capacities, and to investigate its potential to offer new forms of participation.
According to its field of interest, each collaborator can be part of any team, bringing his/her knowledge and ideas to the workgroup and, at the same time, learning from the group and the teachers: Jordi Claramonte, Chandler McWilliams, Casey Reas, and Víctor Viña. Directed and coordinated by Nerea Calvillo.
For residents out of Madrid, Medialab-Prado will cover for the stay of a limited number of participants at a Youth Hostel during the workshop.
No entry fees.

Advances in Architectural Geometry. CALL FOR PAPERS
This symposium will bring together researchers from the fields of architecture and geometry to discuss recent advances in research and practice and to identify and address the most challenging problems. We aim at connecting researchers from architectural practices and academia. The event consists of two parts, two days of hands-on workshops followed by two days of oral and poster presentations in conference style, including four keynote speakers.
Advances in Architectural Geometry is planned to be the premier venue for disseminating new research ideas and cutting-edge results at the interface of geometry processing and architectural design. This emerging area draws from architectural design, applied mathematics, computer science, and engineering.
We are in particular inviting submissions related to the following topics:
* geometric methods for architectural design and manufacturing
* digital fabrication techniques in architecture and engineering
* design and fabrication optimization in construction
* approximation and meshing of freeform geometry
* applied discrete differential geometry

eCAADe 2010: Future Cities
Contemporary cities are environmentally, socially, and economically unsustainable. The quality of urban life is threatened by such factors as pollution, rising temperatures, limited resources, congestion, social inequalities, aging of large sectors of the world population, poverty, informality, crime, and economic imbalances. The overall planning of future cities is a challenge that can only be faced by interdisciplinary teams combining multitudes of backgrounds and expertise.
The focus of the eCAADe 2010 conference is that of tools, methods, and theories that support the new design of new cities and the transformation of existing cities. Authors are encouraged to submit their most recent research, teaching, practice and experience reports, or novel applications relating to topics of the eCAADe 2010 conference.

Generative design: a paradigm for design research

Generative design offers new modes of aesthetic experience based on the incorporation of system dynamics into the production of artifact and experience. In this paper, we review a number of processes that can be explored by designers and suggest how design as a discipline can benefit from this research. These processes include self-organization, swarm systems and ant colonies, evolution, and generative grammars. We give example applications of these processes to creativity and design.

THESIS PROJECT
Architectural Components (from Phaenotype to Genotype)
The idea was to continue working with parametric software in order to design a space with the capacity of combining a self structured parametric skin with elements capable to control the radiosity and sound effects. The cell has a size capable to fit at least 10 people at one time, but the main issue is that it has the possibility to modify its overall shape or components by changing the parameters which are taken from the surrounding environment; some of which are the amount of light, terrain inclinations, inner space needed, etc. In order to explore its materiality and to allow a natural growth based on the main configuration of the geometry and the material itself, each individual component creates a grid capable to stretch and generate new variations. http://archmpc.blogspot.com/

STEMcloud

STEMcloud has been developed as a parametric furniture system able to generate spatial atmospheres (clouds) by providing light filtration, privacy and oxygenation. STEM cloud promotes a concentrated experience of man-nature interaction in dense urban contexts where the presence of traditional vegetative systems is close to zero. A series of plug-ins add functionality and customization to the system, introducing artificial lighting, objects containers, pin-up surfaces, etc.
The parametric nature of the single modules allows for a computational definition of the overall clouds; environmental gradients of solar radiation, people flow intensity, co2 emissions can be computed and used as generative environments for the developments of specific clouds/assemblages of STEM

An urban grammar for Portuguese colonial new towns in the 18th century.

This study describes the morphological urban order underlying Portuguese treatises and Portuguese urban cartographic representation produced from 16th century to 18th century. The historical documentation suggests that Pythagorean-Euclidian geometry appears to be a crucial ingredient for the understanding of Portuguese urban designthinking and urban design-making. To unveil the genesis of the morphological urban order present in the Portuguese colonial plans of the eighteenth century, a descriptive method, Shape Grammar has been adopted. Shape Grammar, as method, supports the analysis of the form-making logic and has proved to be powerful in shape analysis, description, interpretation, classification, evaluation and generation of a design language.

Open Up is a workshop focused on the development of projects for the digital façade in Medialab-Prado's building. This call is meant for project proposals to be collaboratively developed during the workshop-seminar taking place in Madrid from February 9 through 23, 2010.
The goals of the workshop are to explore the relationship between the urban screen and public space, to experiment with the screen’s communicative, narrative and visual capacities, and to investigate its potential to offer new forms of participation. Selected projects will be developed under the supervision of teachers, technical assistants and an extensive group of collaborators.
Projects submitted to this call should take the following ideas into consideration: the development of strategies for public participation, activation of urban space through the screen, fostering public visibility of agents that normally have none, visualization of public collectives; interaction with portable devices, etc. All those interested in collaborating in one of the selected projects can sign in from January 5 through February 8, 2010.

This study intends to propose a new use of the shape grammar: verify the influence of a certain architect’s language over another architect’s language. Some Brazilian modern architecture critics suggest the existence of an influence of Wright’s prairie houses over Artigas’ early work, but the methods used to reach to this conclusion are always empirical and not very objective. The present work aims to confirm this influence in a more rational manner, comparing Wright’s prairie houses grammar developed by Koning and Eizenberg (1981) to Artigas’ first phase grammar that will developed in this work.

Generative methods in urban design: a progress assessment
The year 2007 marked the 20-year anniversary of A New Theory of Urban Design (1987), a slender volume by Christopher Alexander and colleagues that serves as a notable milepost within the half-century old “design methods movement” in which Alexander himself played a seminal role. The “generative” design method of A New Theory focused less upon the specification of a final form through schematic planning, and more on the stepwise process by which a form might emerge from the evolutionary actions of a group of collaborators. In so doing, it challenged the notion of “design” as a progressive expression of schematic intentions, and argued for a conception of design as a stepwise, non-linear evolution in response to a series of contextual urban factors. In the 20 years since, significant progress has been made to develop the insights of generativity in urban design, as in other fields. Some of Alexander's ideas have been incorporated - notably by practitioners of The New Urbanism - and some have been challenged and dismissed, including, notably, by Alexander himself. The author assesses progress since this milepost volume - substantial, he argues - as well as setbacks and shortcomings, and significant opportunities still remaining.
